What sounds more appealing, a lemon lime flavored drink, or water? While most of us would probably choose the first option, is it truly necessary or needed to consume? It’s hard not to get sucked into the commercials or billboards we see every day, advertising the new Gatorade flavor. Who wouldn’t want a sweet, delicious, refreshing flavored sports drink? Your Portland Personal trainer would tell you there’s a fine line between drinking water, and needing to drink Gatorade.
Advertisements for Gatorade persuade consumers like us to consume Gatorade every time we workout. Some people even drink Gatorade in their leisure, making it a staple in their fridge. While the product itself is easy to take down, it is not for everyone.
Water acts as a great drink that keeps us hydrated before, during, and after our workouts. So when is it appropriate for Gatorade need to make an appearance in our exercise regimen? Water is enough for light to moderate exercise, lasting from 30 minutes to an hour. A fitness trainer Portland believes that Gatorade is appropriate to drink in cases where intense activity is taking place, lasting more than an hour. When we are working out at a high intensity, for prolonged periods of time, our body loses nutrients it needs. Nutrients such as electrolytes, sodium and carbohydrates are replaced with the consumption of Gatorade.
Let us take a more detailed looked at what qualifies as light to moderate exercise, and how this differs from high intensity exercise. Taking a leisurely walk with your dog around the neighborhood for an hour or lifting weights in the gym for sixty minutes would be considered light to moderate exercise, only needing water for hydration. Running a half marathon or enduring a sports game that involves constant movement with little rest would qualify for Gatorade consumption.
There are some things to consider. Let’s say you just finished an hour long training session with your personal trainer Portland Oregon. While you may have sweat a lot, and the intensity was high, drinking water is sufficient since the exercise wasn’t completed over a long period of time. Not enough nutrients in your body were lost to have a need for Gatorade. Gatorade is packed with calories, carbohydrates, and sodium, so drinking it only when it is needed so that you are avoiding doing more harm than good is essential.
Remember, if you the exercise or activity you are performing is not vigorous, or lasting more than one hour, water will suit you just fine.
